Special Agent John Risenhoover is the NIBIN National Coordinator, named to the position in August 2012. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the bureau’s NIBIN program, which include training, strategy and management of over 150 partner sites throughout the United States.

These partner sites play a critical role in ATF’s mission of investigating and impacting violent crime and improving the quality of life for American citizens.  The mission statement of NIBIN is to identify, target and prosecute shooters and their sources of crime guns. This is all part of ATF’s Crime Gun Intelligence Strategy.

Prior to this appointment, Special Agent Risenhoover was an intelligence officer in the Denver Field Division, where he developed the Denver Crime Gun Intelligence Center, the concept of moving NIBIN from a forensic tool to an investigative lead tool, and ATF’s Crime Gun Intelligence Strategy. 

Special Agent Risenhoover began his career with ATF in 1989 and was assigned to the Houston Field Division as a Special Agent with the United States Treasury Department in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He was responsible for the criminal enforcement of firearms and federal-related offenses in the San Antonio area where he worked a variety of investigations, including complex-gang investigations. He received numerous special act/ performance awards for his work on gang investigations and was a qualified expert in federal court in the Western Judicial District of Texas. He was wounded in the raid in Waco and received numerous service medals. He was a primary investigator on the Oklahoma City Bombing Investigation, assigned to the Unknown Subject Desk and received numerous awards for his work with the FBI.  He was assigned to the DEA Task Force and was involved in numerous major investigations.

Special Agent Risenhoover graduated from Baylor University in 1988 with a major in Business Administration and a minor in Financial Planning. Special Agent Risenhoover also served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves.
