Michael Kurtenbach

Commander, Phoenix Police Department

Michael Kurtenbach was born and raised in Phoenix and has been with the Phoenix Police Department for over 22 years.  Throughout his career, he has been a strong proponent of Community Based Policing and has been involved in significant partnership-building with the citizens of Phoenix while holding varying assignments and ranks in both Patrol and specialty assignments.

Mike was promoted to commander on October 10, 2011, and was assigned to the Maryvale Precinct and Training Bureau.  Mike also serves as a Department liaison to the City Manager’s Community Engagement and Outreach Task Force and is responsible for facilitating the implementation of specific recommendations designed to increase community access to, communication with and confidence in the Phoenix Police Department.

Mike has been the recipient of numerous awards and commendations throughout his career, to include the Distinguished Service Award for the implementation of Operation Stabilization, a comprehensive, holistic program that significantly reduced gang-related crimes and violence in the South Mountain Precinct, while building the capacity of community and faith-based organizations to provide needed services to area residents.
