Michael S. Shafer

Michael S. Shafer, Ph.D., Director. Dr. Shafer directs all of the Center's initiatives, which focus on the areas of behavioral health policies and practice, including substance abuse treatment and mental health treatment  services. He also serves as Professor in the School of Social Work in the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University and as the Co-Director of the Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center. Dr. Shafer earned his Ph.D. in Education in 1988 from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has received numerous awards and citations, including recognition from the U.S. Department of Justice for the development of crisis intervention training for law enforcement personnel in Tucson. His current research evaluates the adoption of evidence-based treatment practices by behavioral health agencies and clinicians. Dr. Shafer is a frequent contributor to the professional literature and he consults with behavioral health agencies throughout the country.
